Traveling while pregnant

Is it safe to fly when you're pregnant?

This was the first question I googled when I received my invitation to Pure Haven's invite-only conference. It seemed like most airlines and doctors were ok with pregnant women flying up to their 36th week of pregnancy. (I would be exactly 36 weeks pregnant on the day of my flight!) I obviously called and talked with my doctor about traveling and what precautions I should take.

36 weeks pregnant and boarding an airplane sounds a little risky! But my doctor assured me I have nothing to worry about! I don't have any signs of preterm labor and I've had a healthy pregnancy. The doctors biggest concerns were:

  1. Sitting still for too long. During pregnancy some women experience blood clots from sitting down for too long. My doctors advice was to walk around at least once during the flight & do not fall asleep! Luckily my flight is only about 2.5 hours (fairly short) and I can never fall asleep on a plane!

  1. Destination! My doctor was happy to hear that I was staying inside of the US. This meant that my flight was short, not overseas and I didn't have to worry about vaccinations.

So what makes traveling different when you're pregnant?!

For me it was:

- Bathroom breaks! I was worried about not having an isle seat because of how many times I have to use the bathroom. Also going in and out of the airport bathroom multiple times with all of my luggage and my round belly seemed tricky! But it's nothing I can't handle! It was not as bad as I thought it would be. Traveling alone is a lot easier than traveling with Ayla!

- Snacks. Luckily I'm used to packing snacks! I wanted to make sure that I always had food on hand so I packed plenty of bars, trail mix, fruit, etc. just in case I was feeling queazy or my blood sugar got too low. I never ran out of food (even with the delay on the way home) and there was always somewhere to get more!

- Comfort. Pregnancy makes traveling less comfortable. I was less worried about looking cute and more concerned with wearing comfortable clothes & shoes! I wore my belly bands and sneakers on both flights. I also dressed in layers because I didn't want to get overheated or too cold.

- Fatigue. There's a lot of rushing around (and sitting & waiting!) during travel. It can be extra tiring when you're pregnant. I brought an essential oil blend to help me relax and my Premama Energy boost for when I need a pick-me-up!

What I packed:

Prenatal vitamins

Premama Digestive Relief

Small Blanket (I'm always cold on airplanes & hotel rooms)

Bao Bei ProBump band

Comfort Oil

Water Bottle

New Audio book!

Headphones

Lap top

Passion Planner

Toiletries

Hair straightener/curling iron

2 Dresses

Sneakers & sandals

Workout Clothes

Pajamas

Socks & underwear

Comfortable travel clothes

Sweatshirt/jean jacket

Bathing Suit

My trip was short but it was great and I'm glad I went! It was my last little getaway before baby girl comes! I was trying to think of anything I would have done differently, but everything went smoothly. If you're pregnant and planning to travel, be sure to check with your doctor first! I hope you have a safe trip!!
