Navigating FOMO as a Mom

In 2023, I had the opportunity to attend the Prego Expo in LA—an incredible event featuring all things baby, from strollers and car seats to nursery furniture and breastfeeding essentials. But this wasn’t just any expo. I also participated in CreateHer, a pre-expo day exclusively for influencers and content creators. It was an exciting opportunity to connect with brand marketing teams face-to-face—an invaluable experience for someone like me who doesn’t often get out for work events.

This year, however, my plans to return didn’t go as expected.

The Excitement and Reality of Travel with a Baby

Initially, I was thrilled to revisit the expo, especially now as a mom. I imagined testing products and sharing insights while networking in a relaxed setting. But as the date approached, reality hit. A cross-country flight with my baby, Jessie? A 24-hour turnaround? It suddenly seemed less practical and more exhausting.

That’s when the dreaded FOMO (fear of missing out) crept in—a feeling I know many moms can relate to. Whether it’s a bachelorette party, a weekend girls' trip, or a simple night out, there are countless moments where life with a baby makes participating feel impossible.

Shifting Perspectives

Instead of giving in to FOMO, I reframed my thinking:

  1. Finding Local Alternatives:
Just because I couldn’t attend the Prego Expo didn’t mean I couldn’t connect with people or explore new products. I started focusing on opportunities closer to home in Sarasota, from local networking events to visiting new spots like Laura’s smoothie and coffee shop. Building relationships locally has been just as rewarding as flying to LA, with the added benefit of fostering connections I can maintain long-term.

  2. Rethinking "What I’m Missing":
I reminded myself that the purpose of the expo—trying out baby products—can be achieved at local stores or through online research. And let’s be honest: spending $500 on flights to potentially receive free gear doesn’t make financial sense when I could buy exactly what I need with that money.

  3. Making Small, Intentional Efforts:
Whether it’s sending a text to a friend, planning a quick coffee date, or even saying hi to another mom at the park, small actions can create meaningful connections. Big trips and events are great, but sometimes it’s the little moments that bring the most joy and fulfillment.

A Message for Fellow Moms

Mom life comes with sacrifices, but it doesn’t mean we have to miss out entirely. It’s about finding ways to bring joy, connection, and fun into our current season of life. FOMO is real, but so is the beauty of creating meaningful moments in ways that work for us.

So, if you’re battling FOMO, take a deep breath and ask yourself:

  • What’s a small step I can take to connect with others?
  • How can I create similar experiences closer to home?
  • Can I reallocate my time, energy, or budget in a way that aligns with my current priorities?

Motherhood is a journey, not a race. Let’s give ourselves grace and remember that every choice we make is shaping a life we love.

Until then, enjoy the small, intentional moments—they add up to something wonderful. 😊
